Happy Birthday, Bob!
It almost escaped our attention, but thank heavens we found out in time, today is Bob Gleason’s birthday! We want to thank him for all the columns he is writing on our blog and wish him a very special day! No doubt, he and Charlotte and family will have a good celebration.

Raising Number Three-Michelle Kay Gleason/Roesch
By Bob Gleason When Michelle arrived on March 18, 1961, there were absolutely none of the “Is it a boy or a girl” questions.  She came with a complete head of curly blond hair. However, Michelle was unfortunate to have been born significantly prone to motion sickness.  (Charlotte and I both experienced a little of it, but she must have gotten a dose from each of us—poor...

Kansas couple may win a million bucks →
These are some friends of mine. I have worked with Jaime Green for many years at The Eagle, where she is a photographer. And, she is incredibly talented. Her husband, Carter, is equally talented as a musician. Together, they have put together a video and entered a contest. And, now they are finalists. If they win — and they could -their victory party is sure to be epic!

Cool video on how the Symphony in the Flint Hills... →
This is a time-lapse video of what the prairie looks like from start to finish for the Symphony in the Flint Hills. As many of you know, thousands of people attend the event each June “out in the middle of nowhere” to hear music from a selected artist and the Kansas City Symphony. Peter Coyote was this year’s guest narrator. The featured singer was Kansas native Samuel Ramey. For...

A NOTE FROM CRAIG CIPRA
Hi Dixie, Thanks for sharing.    I have enjoyed Bob Gleason’s accounts.   I didn’t know Bob.   My older siblings could probably relate better.  What has impressed me is the detail of his stories.  Either Bob took really good notes as he was growing up, or has excellent recall. I just seem to remember bits and pieces of history.  One bit that I have often thought about involved Jim...

A yellow lab has gone missing from 8 miles west and 2 north from Larned on Sunday.  “Chief” is a 7 month old intact male with dark tipped ears.  He does not have a collar.  If this dog is spotted, please call 316-680-3292.

We thought it couldn’t hurt to see a good summer thunderstorm roll across the prairie. This video was shot by Stephen Locke, an incredible photographer, of a storm in June near McCook, Neb.

How dry is it?
We received this e-mail making the latest rounds on the Internet today from Naomi Culbreath. We thought we’d share … HOW DRY IS IT IN KANSAS?           It’s so dry in KANSAS that the Baptists are starting to baptize by sprinkling, the Methodists are using wet-wipes, the Presbyterians are giving out rain-checks, and the Catholics are praying for the wine to turn back into...

Janelle's Story
By Bob Gleason Janelle Rae Gleason/Ziegenfuss (Robin)—November 8, 1959 When Janelle, (child number two), arrived, she was “as bald as a billiard ball!”  Remember how many people thought Mike was a cute little girl?  You guessed it—many folks thought Janelle was a cute little boy.  Oh, well. The first contribution that Janelle made to our family was to make us realize we were...

NOTE FROM JIM PENKA
Jim sent the following note of explanation about his pictures appearing in the blog recently.  Thanks Jim,  I’ll edit each of these pictures to add your notes. Reviewing the blog, I should have had some backup info on the pictures I sent.   The one of Melvin and I was taken before our Senior’s Night presentation.   We both had decided we were going to join the Air Force and thought we...
