Jack Russell dog is missing
A male Jack Russell is missing. He was last seen 1 1/2 mile east of Radium at the turn off on K-19.  He is 10 months old, black with white and brown on his face.  He has a black collar with white writing “Bad to the Bone” with Larned Vet Clinic Tags.  If this dog is spotted, please call Sheila Thompson at 620-982-4389 or cell 620-285-5545.

BUCKET PICKLES -
Hopefully the blazing summer heat didn’t destroy your garden.  This year my garden consisted of 3 patio tomato plants and a small batch of herbs. My tomatoes haven’t done as well as I hoped and I did lose one yellow tomato plant to the heat.  The sweet 100’s and Roma plants are blooming again and I have hopes of having a late but abundant crop. A friend from church has given me a batch of...

Cattle drive to help celebrate 150 years of Kansas... →
I am looking forward to this cattle drive in September that will follow the old Cox trail, a branch of the old Chisholm trail, from Caldwell to Ellsworth. Should be pretty cool to see!

The fall migration has begun! →
And just when our late summer temperatures are warming back up, there are signs that maybe Mother Nature is going on with her time table. This link is radar showing “roost rings” of the Purple Martin migration. Each evening at sunset, the birds bunch up in roosts. Then, in the mornings, the birds take flight. These roost rings are in eastern Kansas.

GROWING UP WITH DR BILL SMITH IN THE 20'S & 30'S
PART V – RADIUM SCOUTING EXPERIENCES My Boy Scout days started when the Methodist pastor decided to start a troop.  It finished when he was transferred out two years later.  I was 9 years old and there were so few of us that we all met together.  I remember going on a camping trip where we learned to cook two meals.  Supper was bacon, steak and potato.  First we made some mud and covered the...

Dog found
A two-year-old female shepherd was found Saturday sitting on a porch 6 miles south of Larned.  She has no collar, no tags, no micro-chip.  She is a very nice dog.  If anyone knows anything about this dog, please call (620) 285-5267.

TAFFY RECIPE
Dr. Bill’s story about pulling taffy with his sisters reminded me of the Taffy Pulls we used to have at Eden Valley Church when I was a kid.  The women would make the candy and when it was cool enough to pull, two of us would team up and start pulling the taffy.  It seemed like it took forever to get it to the right stiffness.  And yes I do remember that some teams had whiter taffy than...

GROWING UP WITH WILLIAM LAWRENCE SMITH JR. ALSO...
MEMORIES OF OUR RADIUM HOME - We all had chores to do before school and after school.  In the town of Radium just about everyone had their own cow.  Every week one of us boys would have to go to the pasture and bring the cows home.  Once we got them in town, the cows would go to their separate home by themselves.  We never did get them trained to come home by themselves at night. When I was a...
